The Spectrum of AI Use
Not all AI use in journalism carries the same ethical weight. It helps to think of a spectrum. These tools augment human journalists without replacing editorial judgment.

The primary lens must be public service — and that means asking not “Can AI do this?” but “Should AI do this, and under what conditions?”

The principles of accuracy, accountability, independence, and transparency are not negotiable. How we apply them to new tools is the work of our generation.
The line is not a single bright boundary. It is a series of decisions, each requiring the kind of judgment that, ironically, no AI can reliably provide.
